Kitten

Hi everyone. I wasn't going to write my first entry until I got to Houston, but something newsworthy has happened. Yesterday I spent four hours trying to coax a tabby out of the hedge outside my apartment. She swindled me out of a whole package of tuna, but she wouldn't let me catch her! This morning I went to the tractor supply in Knightdale and got a humane squirrel trap. Bated with another pack of tuna and set under the hedge, the kitten was caught in about 20 minutes. She's very skinny, the poor thing, and she's got fleas and perhaps an eye infection. She's also very affectionate, cute, and has good house manners! She and I are going to see the vet tomorrow, to see what we can do to fix her up. My adult cat, Titan, doesn't seem to care for her. I'm keeping them apart, in case she's sick, anyway. We decided to call her Cory (short for Albacore). If Titan doesn't come around by the end of the week, we'll find a more hospitable home for her. If he does play nice, we are going to keep her; she's a complete treasure!

Update: Cory loves the vet. The vet says that she's got respiratory and eye infections, worms, fleas, and is underweight. On the bright side she doesn't have feline leukemia or HIV. She gave us some medicine and special food. We're going to wait for two weeks until she's well enough to get her shots. The vet says that she has lots of kittens that have been abandoned outside of her storefront that she's taking care of. If anyone is interested in healthy, happy kittens, I will put you in touch. My friend Mary (and the vet agrees) says that Titan will need longer than a week to get used to Cory, maybe as long as a month.

I bet Cory is a happy camper since you all took her in and are taking such good care of her. How is Titan adjusting (or not adjusting :) ) to her? There is a stray adult black cat outside of our apartments that we have been feeding the past few months, but I have to find a stray cat rescue/care organization before Halloween comes if you know what I mean. Not a good night for black cats to be on the street if some rogue teenagers get ahold of them!

Cory's fantastic! We're so lucky to have her. Titan and she tussle occasionally, but for the most part are peaceable. We got her her first round of shots last week. She's growing very quickly, but she's not big enough to be put under anesthetic to be spayed, yet. For a stray cat rescue-type organization there is Operation Catnip in Raleigh which is aimed at cat's that are too feral to be pets: http://www.operationcatnip.org/ We went to Wyoming and Colorado. I'm going to put up an entry about it, as soon as I get the photos in a small enough format to post.
